[Men's Indoor Track & Field] Coil Wins Shot Put National Championship

Comments

BROOKINGS, S.D. – On his final throw of the event, Indiana Wesleyan University’s Brennan Coil threw his best mark of his career to win the Shot Put national championship at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championship in Brookings, South Dakota.

“What an amazing performance by Brennan today,” said IWU head coach Caleb Snyder. “I’ve had the honor of watching him grow under Coach Kyle’s leadership since he was a sophomore and he has turned into a special athlete and a man of character and grit. I couldn’t be more proud of who he is and who he continues to become, and this national title is just icing on the cake.”

Heading into his final throw of the meet, Coil was in third place with a mark of 17.46-meters and Mitchell Soviak of Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) led with a throw of 17.65-meters. Coil stepped up and threw a new PR with a distance of 18.31-meters (60 feet 1 inch) to win the national championship.

“We couldn't be more proud of Brennan on his national title,” said IWU throws coach Kyle Abney. “His years of hard work and his God-given talent were showcased throughout the whole competition today. It takes heart, it takes brains, and it takes physicality to compete like that. He had all three today.”

The individual national championship is the seventh for the men’s track and field program and just the second indoor national title. Michael Moffitt won the first indoor title in the High Jump in 2016.
